I think I remember a tournament submission guideline document from the 90's that suggested 7 areas (30 min each), but didn't go quite into that level of specificity. It definitely seems like the Gygaxian products were larger campaign-suitable areas, thinking of future publication, from the get-go. This weekend my (excellent) players in G3 made it to the 2nd level in their 3rd 4-hour session. The outline was pretty standardized, and if you look at the tournament portions of the published modules, they stuck to this plan:

2 Traps
1 Trick to fool the players
1 Problem the players had to solve
1 Encounter with the basic monster of the round (orcs, hobgoblins, gnolls, etc.)
1 Ambush prepared by the basic monster of the round
1 Encounter with the basic monster and a friend (an ogre, for example)
1 Encounter with an unintelligent monster
1 Encounter with a brand new monster
1 Grand Finale

I will note from personal experience running tournament versions, C2, A1, and R2 run quite well to fit in 3.5 hours (C2 especially -- it's very linear). In contrast, even two different teams of good players barely got to level 2 of G3 in four hours.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08868302412533031659noreply@blogger.com
